New Alabama Seat Belt Law
On September 1 of this year, Alabama began enforcing a new traffic seat belt law which you may not be aware of:
What you need to know:
Previously, Alabama did not require passengers in the back seat of a vehicle to wear a seat belt. That changed on September 1. It is now required that all passengers in a vehicle, including those in the backseat, must now wear a seat belt.
This new seat belt law is a secondary violation, which means that the police can’t pull you over only because someone in the backseat is not wearing a seat belt, but they can pull you over for something else and write a ticket for each person not wearing a seat belt. So make sure that your friends and family know that if they get in your car, they must buckle up. You, as the driver, will be responsible for their decisions if they don’t.
